Can an Employer Look at Your MyFaceTwitterBook Page?

Congratulations.  You kicked ass at your interview, and you’re sure you’re going to get a job offer.  All human resources has to do is talk to your references.  No problem.  You’ve already told your references to expect a call.

Two weeks later and you haven’t heard a thing.  You talked to your references and they tell you that their phone calls with HR went great.  They were really impressed with you.  You call to ask what’s going on with the hiring process, and they tell you they’ve decided to hire someone else.

What happened?

Of course, it could have been anything, including there actually being another candidate who was more qualified than you.  But maybe the employer decided to do a Google® reference check.  Can an employer go online and search for you?  Yes.  There is nothing that prevents them from doing so.  The only thing an employer cannot do is discriminate against you on some illegal basis, such as your age, gender, race, religion, etc.

But what if they found your Mardi Gras pictures you put online to share with your friends? Did you really intend for other people to see them? Unfortunately, once they’re out there, you might not be able to unring that bell, put the toothpaste back in the tube, or get that cat back into the bag.

To prevent people from seeing things you don’t want them to see, do a Google audit. See what is out there. Change your facebook settings so that only people you want can read about you. Get rid of your MySpace page. That is so 2005, anyway.
